The Forest School Curriculum

The Lower School have been enjoying enriched learning through our Forest School curriculum.

Miss Lydia’s class went to Wandsworth Park on Friday 15th October to do their first  Forest School activity. The children each chose their own stick and then chose various natural items to attach to their stick with a rubber band. Items collected included more sticks, feathers, leaves and berries. They were absolutely delighted with their ‘journey stick’ and got to take them home at the end of the day!

In Maths,  Year 1 practised counting in tens in the park . Everyone collected ten leaves on a stick and put them together to count up to 170. They  did some tricky sums adding groups of tens. Well done Year 1 for hanging onto all your leaves on a very windy morning!

They also made ‘Hapazome’ Art, which  is the Japanese art of beating berries and leaves to create pigmentation in cloth. They used a variety of autumn berries, as well as lavender and mint flowers, so the finished products smelled lovely as well as looking beautiful!

STEM Week - Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths at The Roche School

The week commencing 3rd October will be STEM Week at The Roche School, based around the theme of Water. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, so the week will involve many exciting experiments, challenges and construction activities. On  Monday 3rd October, STEM Week will be kicked off by a special whole school assembly centred on the theme of ‘Water’, led by a special guest…Science Man. Throughout the day every class will have a workshop looking at the importance of water, uses of water and water experiments. On Tuesday 4th October we will be holding a whole school ‘Times Tables Challenge’, where every child will compete (with differentiated tables) to gain as many points for their house as possible. Good luck! On Thursday 6th October, The STEM team at school will lead an interactive assembly and award prizes won during the weeks’ challenges.
