EAL
The EAL department is here to support students who are learning English as an additional language. We value the importance of students’ first language (or languages) and recognise that being bilingual (or trilingual!) is a great advantage in life.
When students come to the school their English language support needs are assessed. If it is decided that support is needed in order for a child to successfully access the curriculum, they are taught for between 1 to 3 sessions a week either individually or in a small group of 1:2 or 1:3 children. These sessions are taught by specialist teachers trained in teaching English as an Additional Language. The aim of the lessons is to develop fluency in speaking, reading and listening. They are multi-sensory and involve reinforcement through role-play, games and activities. Currently we use the Macmillan English World Series for the core text books but additional resources are brought in as required.
