School Newsletter – 20th November 2025

Dear parents,

This shorter week started with Mr Gilbert presenting on Hannukah in Upper School assembly. He talked about the history of the Maccabees and how the festival is celebrated today. We wish all our families celebrating the festival in the middle of December a happy Hannukah!

On Tuesday, Lower School welcomed Dons Local Action Group into assembly to talk to the children about the upcoming Christmas food-themed collection on 5th December.

This week, Year 1 pupils were transported back thousands of years during their visit to Butser Ancient Farm. They engaged in workshops where they learned stone knapping, carved chalk, and even created sparks to start a fire.

Year 2 also went on a trip this week to the Wandsworth Civic Centre to listen to poet Zohab Zee Khan, storyteller Pomme, and author Joseph Coelho for a spoken word poetry show. The children loved the interactive event, getting on their feet for beatboxing, poetry with music, and a lively finale song.

NEXT WEEK

The next phase of University College’s research with our current Year 2s on the impact of bilingualism starts after the long weekend. The findings are going to be very interesting but our link with UCL has already resulted in training for our teachers and the opportunity to attend a conference on bilingual education in Qatar. Such interesting work!

On Tuesday, 8.50am till 9.20am on Zoom, Mr Tyrone will be giving a talk to parents on Sport at The Roche School explaining how provision develops through the school and what is on offer in terms of competitive matches, clubs and support for sports scholarships. The usual link sent earlier in the week will be used.

On Wednesday, our Reception children will be visiting the library again. Meanwhile, senior choir will be performing in Southside at 2.15pm. Parents are welcome to come along to get in the early Christmas spirit.

On Thursday, Ancient Egypt will be brought to life with giant replica artefacts and storytelling for our Year 3 children as they participate in a workshop at school.

Also on Thursday, the Year 6 Community and Fundraising team will be running an accessories stall from 3pm till 4pm to raise money for our charity Makimei Children’s Home. Pupils are invited to make accessories (perhaps over this long weekend…) to then sell to pupils – these can include keychains, hair bands, loom band bracelets etc.

My next, hotly anticipated, birthday tea party for all those with a birthday in November will be on Friday 28th November at 9am.
