Wellbeing

The wellbeing of our pupils is our greatest priority. We want each and every child to feel safe, respected and motivated to learn. Our dedicated and experienced teachers work together to establish a warm and supportive environment where pupils can develop their social and emotional skills, strengthening their personal resilience in the face of challenges big and small, and encouraging them to approach all interactions with compassion and good humour.

The Roche Approach

The Roche Approach spells out our core values in more ways than one:

R – Respect

O – Open Mindedness

C – Compassion

H – Humour

E – Effort

It is a daily reference point for every child and adult in our school community. Ask any one of our pupils to explain to you what The Roche Approach is all about, and they will tell you it’s about how we treat each other in our school: it’s about kindness. The Roche Approach is deeply embedded in our thinking, in our approach to teaching and learning, and in our approach to fostering warm and respectful relationships with one another. The Roche Approach is a way for pupils to reflect on how they can be their best selves – in the classroom, in the playground and even on the sports fields. Pupils whose outstanding conduct has embodied The Roche Approach are celebrated in our weekly assemblies, recognising their contribution to our happy and vibrant school community.

Room at The Roche: a wellbeing drop-in facility

Room at The Roche is a small room with a big heart.  Located in Hut 5 of the playground and staffed by one of our pastoral care team, this safe space is open to all pupils at playtimes and lunchtimes.  Pupils can drop in to discuss any concerns or anxieties, from low-level friendship problems, to worries about upcoming 11+ exams, to bigger concerns about changes at home or in the family.

Room at The Roche is one of several safeguarding and pastoral care initiatives at our school. Conversations at Room at The Roche are confidential, but, with the child’s consent, we may contact parents to discuss the matter further if we think that would be beneficial.  Additionally, we work closely with outside professionals and therapists to ensure that every child receives the right level of support in dealing with any bigger challenges they may encounter.

But, more often than not, a little chat, a big hug, and a bit of time hanging out with our well-being dog, Jemima, is enough to alleviate a child’s worries and help them get back to enjoying their day.
