Dear parents,

Today has been our annual celebration of reading in conjunction with World Book Day. In today’s assembly, children from each year group read out the opening lines from their favourite books and explained why these lines made them want to read on. There was also a very special performance of Julia Donaldson’s A Squash and a Squeeze. The star cast of teachers included Miss Lydia as the Hen, Miss Sophie as the Goat, Miss Kate as the Pig and Mr Matthew as the Cow. Ms Anto was the disgruntled Old Lady and Miss Louise was the wise Old Man. Truly hilarious and the kids absolutely loved it!

This afternoon, we have S.F. Said, author of Varjak Paw, coming in to talk to our Years 4, 5 and 6. The book is a class reader in Year 4 and always comes up as one of the children’s favourites so we are very excited to have Mr Said join us.

Our book fair will open this afternoon too at 3pm on the ramp, hosted by Scholastic. It will be available till Thursday 12th March for purchases on a wide range of children’s fiction. Children will also have received a book token that can contribute to any purchases. Huge thanks especially to Mrs Melanie, Mrs Allison and Miss Karen for organising the literary celebrations today and the book fair.

Spring was definitely in the air this week and Year 3 took advantage of the lovely weather to do maths in the park. I went along and it was great to see the children, whiteboards in hand, using their environment to hone their maths skills in a practical way by creating giant fraction number lines.

On Wednesday, the Reverend Keith Parr came to school to answer questions from Year 6 about the Christian faith. Keith was impressed with the depth and thoughtfulness of the questions posed. Keith is also part of our Advisory Board overseeing Safeguarding at the school.

On Thursday, the ramp became a joyous burst of colour as the Early Years children in Reception and Nursery celebrated Holi in the best way possible by getting thoroughly messy with powder paints. It was truly joyous to see and Happy Holi to all parents who celebrated the festival! On the same day. Year 3 went to the library to celebrate World Book Day – the librarian read a story and they looked for books to consolidate their learning in Science (animals including humans), Topic (Ancient Greece) and Spanish.

SPORTS

We were the winners of the ISA London West Regional Tournament! The girls placed first and have qualified for the Nationals. They will be competing in this tournament next week Wednesday and we wish them the very best! Good luck girls!

Year 5 & 6 rugby vs Knightsbridge. Well done to all teams who played against Knightsbridge. 2 teams won, 1 drew and 1 lost. Well done to the Tigers who won 11 – 2 and the Lions Blue team who won 12 – 5.

Netball – well done to our girls who won the second heat of the Wandsworth BEE 5 aside netball. They will be playing in the Wandsworth final on Thursday 19th March. Wishing them the best of luck.

Girls Football – The Roche School hosted a girls’ football festival last week Friday. We had 5 local schools all compete in the festival. A massive well done to our girls who took part in the festival and who managed to finish in third place.

NEXT WEEK

Next week we have our latest parent talk on Zoom on Tuesday 10th March 8.50am-9.20am on the theme of child anxiety given by clinical psychologist Dr Stephanie Doig. Stephanie will be discussing what anxiety is and how it presents in children and providing parents with lots of practical tips which they can start using straight away. The usual Zoom link is in the email sent out earlier in the week.

Tuesday sees our next taster session for 4s and under in our Nursery. This time the theme is ‘Spring Crafts’ which sounds like great fun! Bookable via this link. The next tots taster after that will be a Spanish themed one on Friday 20th March at 10.30am.

Wednesday sees our annual Eisteddfod showcasing the varied musical talents of our pupils from solo and ensemble singing to individual instrumental performances. Parents are welcome to attend the performances when suits over the day. Miss Katie has shared the updated schedule this week via the parent app.  Our school concert takes place on the following Wednesday 18th March at 2pm in the school hall. All welcome.

On the evening of Wednesday 11th, we will welcome all of our feeder secondary schools to our Schools’ Fair starting at 6pm. We have 100 parents booked in for this event which I am sure you will find incredibly helpful in terms of school choices for the 11+. Thank you Mrs Gina who has brilliantly organised the whole thing.

On Thursday evening, our Year 5 Shakespeare club will be performing alongside other schools at The Exchange in Twickenham. Break a leg!

On Friday at 9am, Year 1 will be presenting their year group assembly on the theme of Space. I’m sure it will be cosmic!
