Our children work towards and often beyond the government’s Early Learning Goals through free-flow, play-based learning and engaging teaching sessions.
We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum which is organised into seven areas of learning:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Physical Development
- Communication and Language
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
The nursery class follows an integrated approach of Montessori and the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. In Reception the children work towards the Early Learning Goals within the seven areas of learning. Our children work towards and often beyond the government’s Early Learning Goals through a combination of free-flow, play-based learning and engaging discrete teaching sessions.
Specialist teaching takes place across the Early Years where children also enjoy high-quality music, PE and Forest School sessions.
We base our learning around termly topics as well as using a variety of stimulating stories and non-fiction books to engage children in a broad and balanced curriculum. In Phonics we help develop a love of language, reading and writing. We track and observe each child’s progress closely and introduce reading books when they are ready. In nursery, we work with children to develop and strengthen their fine motor control. This is continued in Reception and the concept of writing is introduced with a creative yet structured approach, helping the children with the technical aspects of letter formation, spelling and punctuation. In Early Years we approach Mathematics initially through the use of concrete resources in a practical way to ensure all children are engaged and challenged in their learning.
Alongside teaching sessions we embed all areas of learning into our free-flow play based learning. The teachers ensure activities are varied to support all learning styles and ensure children are challenging themselves.
Each child’s learning journey is unique and shared with parents in a variety of ways. An online learning journal called Tapestry enables parents to view photographs and observations of their child along with positive and informative teacher comments. Using a range of tracking and assessment methods we ensure that each child makes excellent progress and works to their full potential.
