Exploring Forest School
Forest School is an outdoor education concept that has grown in popularity, particularly for young children. It offers a unique learning experience by allowing children to explore nature, develop new skills, and foster a deeper connection with the environment, all within the safe confines of a natural woodland or outdoor space.
At The Roche School many of our teachers are trained Forest School Leaders, enabling our Nursery and Reception children take part in weekly Forest School sessions at Wimbledon Common and Wandsworth Park. These outdoor experiences provide our young learners with the opportunity to explore nature, develop key skills, and foster a lifelong love for the environment.
Forest School at The Roche School is a child-centred approach that encourages independent learning through hands-on activities in a natural outdoor setting. Our EYFS children are fully immersed in outdoor play, from building dens with fabric and natural resources and climbing trees to exploring wildlife with 'bug pots' and learning about the plants around them. These sessions offer a rich blend of adventure, creativity, and discovery. The children often return to school covered in mud, glowing from the fresh air and smiling from ear to ear!
Our Forest School activities support children’s social, emotional, and physical development, helping them build confidence, resilience, and teamwork. By engaging with nature, children develop problem-solving skills and a sense of responsibility as they navigate the challenges of the outdoor environment.
At The Roche School, we believe that the great outdoors is a valuable classroom. Forest School enables not only educational benefits but also encourages curiosity, self-expression, and collaboration in a safe, and nurturing environment. It’s a vital part of our EYFS curriculum, allowing children to explore and learn in a way that supports their development and well-being.
