Celebrating Diwali
We recently had the most wonderful celebration of Diwali, the festival of light. The Nursery was awash with vibrant colours, as our little ones got to explore the rich traditions of this beautiful Indian festival.
Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most significant festivals celebrated by millions around the world. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. To help our young learners understand its meaning, we started by talking about the story of Diwali, how it marks the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom after defeating the demon king Ravana, and how people light diyas (small oil lamps) to welcome light into their homes.
The morning filled with exciting activities. The children made colourful clay diyas, decorating them with glitter and sequins. They also learned how to make simple rangoli, beautiful patterns traditionally made from coloured powders, rice, and flower petals. They brightened up the classroom with their creativity. We also played some music and the children had a little Bollywood disco, led by Mrs Tulsi which the children absolutely loved! They also had a chance to dress up in bright, festive clothes.
It was wonderful to see the children so engaged, learning about different cultures and traditions fostering a spirit of inclusivity. Happy Diwali to all our little ones and their families.
