The Roche School, Wandsworth

In the Reception Year we continue to build upon the strong foundations the Nursery has developed.

The Early Learning goals set out what most children are expected to achieve by the end of the Foundation Stage. They are organised as seven areas of learning:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

The children in our Reception classes work towards and often beyond the government’s Early Learning Goals through a structured combination of free flow learning and engaging lessons. We deliver a broad and balanced curriculum as well as robust tracking and assessment, ensuring that each child makes excellent progress and fulfills their potential.

We develop positive relationships with the children by creating a stimulating learning environment and by planning exciting learning opportunities which ensures every child feels safe, happy, confident and ready to learn.

We follow the Sounds Write Program of phonics to build up a love of language, reading and writing and observe each child’s progress closely so that we can introduce reading books when they are ready. We create a text rich environment ensuring that children remain stimulated, engaged and are always practising and extending their vocabulary.

The concept of writing is introduced with a creative yet structured approach, helping the children with the technical aspects of letter formation and spelling.

We use the ROCHE APPROACH of Respect, Open-mindedness, Compassion, Humour and Effort to foster values based learning and recognise that each child is unique.  We encourage all children to express themselves with confidence and develop a love of learning- the single most important attribute for children to gain by the end of their time in the Early Years.

Throughout the year the Reception teachers work closely alongside the Lower School team preparing them for a smooth and positive transition into Key Stage 1.
