Helping Children to Understand

Helping Children to Understand: The Roche School’s Distinctive Features by James Roche

We aim to give our pupils stimulating teaching, and personal attention and encouragement in small classes, so that everyone is engaged and no one feels left out. Since different children learn at different rates, several year groups are taught English and Mathematics in sets, with all the members of a set being at a similar level of attainment so that the teaching can suit their understanding.

We help the children to appreciate the issues raised in their studies and to acquire a secure grasp of the ideas and methods involved, so that they can apply them confidently and express their ideas clearly. Such skills are valuable in any walk of life.

Where pupils do not understand, the point is carefully explained, since essential ideas may take time to be grasped. This approach encourages them to address their difficulties so they can make satisfying progress and acquire a buoyant confidence.

We carefully monitor pupils’ progress, and where assistance is needed, we apply it promptly.

From Early Years up to the Year 6 exams, such teaching brings strong academic results without putting the children under pressure.

There is plenty of sport, art, music and drama. The children are encouraged to develop their personal talents and enthusiasm in these lessons and in our many clubs.

Spanish and English

In the younger year groups, one class is wholly in English while in the other one, the full English syllabus is followed in English in the mornings, but afternoon lessons are in Spanish to vastly increase their exposure to the language in comparison to a traditional primary school setting.

A Parent’s Appraisal

“With 4 children ranging from 21 years to my 9-year-old daughter [who is] at The Roche, I have experienced 8 junior and senior schools, and I can genuinely say that none of them reached the high standard of The Roche in terms of inclusiveness and emotional and academic support, not to mention the amount of outdoor exercise they receive. Kindness, support and equality are all reiterated on a daily basis… In a world where mental health issues are on the rise among adolescents … I can’t help but feel that all my children would have benefited if they had attended The Roche.”

School Fees and VAT

We understand the anxiety that parents may be experiencing regarding the Government’s announcement on 29th July that independent schools should incorporate VAT on school fees from 1st January 2025.

Your children’s well-being and your peace of mind are our prime concern and, following discussion, we have decided to absorb the extra cost, so that the amount you will be paying for curricular teaching in this academic year (including VAT where applicable) will remain the same for each term – £6590 in the Lower School and £6760 in the Upper School. We will have to review the situation and the fees for the following academic year once there is more clarity from the government. We care deeply about our community and the future of The Roche School and will endeavour to mitigate costs while continuing to provide our high standard of education.

We will continue to review and monitor fees for each academic year, ensuring that any increases that may be necessary are fair, comparable and clearly communicated.
