Assemblies

IMG_4605 RAssemblies represent an important gathering of the school whereby achievements are celebrated, news is imparted and a range of themes and topics explored with a focus on the spiritual development and well-being of the pupils. Many school assemblies are planned to reflect seasonal occasions and festivals such as Remembrance Day and Harvest Festival.

The school has three assemblies each week: Friday is a whole-school assembly and Monday and Tuesday are assemblies for Upper and Lower School respectively. The Assembly begins and ends with a short piece of recorded classical music including at times pieces from ballets or operas; the children are told a little about when the music was written and by whom and about its style and context. We sing hymns both ancient and modern and read vivid stories from the Old and New Testaments and other significant texts, with a few words on the historical and religious significance of the passage. We respect each child’s religious point of view and try to indicate something of the significance and nature of religious beliefs, bearing in mind the majestic insights of science.

There is a hymn practice each Wednesday led by the Music Department.

There are also themed assemblies for Book Week, French Week, and Poetry Week.
Visitors are welcome to attend the Friday Assembly since it is a good opportunity to sample the warmth and enthusiasm of the school.

STEM Week – Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths at The Roche School

The week commencing 3rd October will be STEM Week at The Roche School, based around the theme of Water. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, so the week will involve many exciting experiments, challenges and construction activities. On  Monday 3rd October, STEM Week will be kicked off by a special whole school assembly centred on the theme of ‘Water’, led by a special guest…Science Man. Throughout the day every class will have a workshop looking at the importance of water, uses of water and water experiments. On Tuesday 4th October we will be holding a whole school ‘Times Tables Challenge’, where every child will compete (with differentiated tables) to gain as many points for their house as possible. Good luck! On Thursday 6th October, The STEM team at school will lead an interactive assembly and award prizes won during the weeks’ challenges.
