Independent Young Minds

At The Roche School, we believe that fostering independence in Nursery and Reception is key to building confident, curious, and resilient learners. Our nurturing environment encourages children to explore, make choices, and develop essential life skills through play and structured activities.

From the moment they join us, our youngest learners are supported in developing self-care skills, such as putting on their own coats, taking ownership of their belongings, tidying up after activities, and making decisions about their learning. These small steps help build confidence and a sense of responsibility. Through a balance of child-led and teacher-guided experiences, we encourage problem-solving, communication, and critical thinking. Our classrooms are designed to promote independence, with accessible resources that allow children to take ownership of their learning.
We also place a strong emphasis on social and emotional development, helping children to express their feelings, collaborate with peers, and develop resilience. By fostering independence early on, we equip our children with the confidence and skills they need to thrive, both in school and beyond.
