This year marks the 40th in the history of The Roche School.

The Roche School started life with five children in 1983 when Carmen Roche opened “Mrs Roche’s Coaching Establishment”. The focus on “thorough teaching in a homely environment” was popular with families, and led the tutorial school to grow rapidly. Pupils achieved excellent results including scholarships to top schools like Westminster, Wycombe Abbey and St Paul’s, whilst having lots of fun – just as they do today.

The school has been through the Dr Roche years and is onto a new era with a young and enthusiastic Sophie Roche. We have seen many wonderful children pass through our doors, flourishing in the warmth and encouragement of a challenging, aspirational, family-run, emotionally intelligent school. There are now Roche alumni carving out lives for themselves all over the world in different organisations and industries, and building amazing careers for themselves – a testament to the breadth of opportunity they have enjoyed at this school.

As we celebrate 40 years of inspiring education at The Roche School, we hope you enjoy this short video about our history:

Below, our founder, Carmen Roche, shares her memories of the school in its early days:

“The highlight of the week 40 years ago was the chocolate digestives for break on Fridays, followed by ice skating for all at Queens in the afternoon – an opportunity to have fun, get some exercise or show off pirouettes. Monday afternoon outings included the Stock Exchange, the pathology museum at Charing Cross Hospital and Bekonscot model village. Parents and grannies with a house in the countryside would put up a class of excited 10-year olds for the annual carefully-planned trip full of activities and home cooking. The ex-pupils of all ages, who still regularly drop in to visit us, or return as staff or indeed to send their own children or other relatives to the school are a heart-warming testament to their fond memories of the school.”
